Feb. 21, 2011: Sophomore sire ARAGORN (IRE) had three new winners recently! The action kicked off on Friday, Feb. 11, when the three-year-old gelding Birdie Beats Par overcame a wide draw to take a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Fair Grounds. Third to the highly regarded Machen in his dirt debut in New Orleans in his previous start, Birdie Beats Par was given a 4-1 chance in a crowded 11-horse field. Away alertly from post nine, he shadowed the pacesetter on the backstretch, pulled his way to even terms three furlongs out and asserted down the lane to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Birdie Beats Par was bred by Oak Lodge USA and sold as a weanling for $90,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November Sale. Tom Amoss trains Birdie Beats Par for Late Night Stables LLC.
Two days later, ARAGORN‘s three-year-old filly High Strider earned her diploma in a Gulfstream Park maiden. Sold by Lane’s End for $160,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Sale, High Strider was sent off the 2-1 choice in her second career start and lived up to advanced billing for owner Let’s Go Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher. Sitting in a mid-pack position off modest early fractions, she rallied stoutly and was up to win by a length. High Strider was bred by Dell Ridge Farm.
On Feb. 19, Billy Two Hats, a Lane’s End-bred and -sold runner, made quite an impression in his first start as a three-year-old. Racing under the silks of Thunderhead Farms, the 5-1 shot rushed to the front, setting splits of :21.79 and :45.24 to demolish his rivals by 6 1/2 lengths!
