Grade III winner Grasshopper, who nearly defeated Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Street Sense in the 2007 Travers Stakes (gr. I), has been retired from racing.
The 7-year-old son of Dixie Union will stand at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Texas near Hempstead. Grasshopper hit the board in 13 of 21 career starts with five victories and earnings of $848,852. His stud fee will be announced shortly.
Bred and campaigned by Farish, E.J. Hudson Jr. and the Estate of James A. Elkins Jr., Grasshopper made his stakes debut in the 2007 Travers, when he was beaten just a half-length by Street Sense.
Grasshopper, who finished second in five other graded stakes throughout his career, including the 2008 Whitney (gr. I), easily won the 2008 Mineshaft Handicap (gr. III) at Fair Grounds.
Bred in Kentucky, Grasshopper is out of the Mr. Prospector mare Grass Skirt and is a full brother to grade III winner Turf War and stakes winner Straw Hat.
