Mar. 5, 2011: PLEASANTLY PERFECT’s Setsuko came within a nose of giving his sire a second Grade 1 winner with a sterling effort in the $750,000, 1 1/4-mile G1 Santa Anita H. at Santa Anita today. The four-year-old colt, runner-up in last year’s G1 Santa Anita Derby, was never far back while racing very wide. He forged into contention in upper stretch, but through a roughly run drive to the wire, the colt was bumped hard at the furlong grounds. Undeterred, he gamely dug in and battled eventual winner Game On Dude every inch to the wire. Bred and owned by Wertheimer & Frere and trained by Richard Mandella, Setsuko has now finished first or second in six of 12 and earned $396,686.
Two weeks earlier at Santa Anita, another four-year-old by PLEASANTLY PERFECT, the filly Cozi Rosie, put up a huge effort. A Jerry and Ann Moss homebred, Cozi Rosie rallied with a flourish to capture the G2 Buena Vista H. on the lawn. The winner of last year’s G3 Senorita S. hadn’t raced since running Evening Jewel to a head in the last May’s G2 Honeymoon H. at Hollywood. John Sadler trains the filly, who has won four of nine and banked $247,280.
PLEASANTLY PERFECT is also the sire of last year’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Shared Account.
