Lane’s End’s exciting young freshman sire ENGLISH CHANNEL today rang up another eye-catching winner, this one at Saratoga, the most prestigious race meet in the country. Captain Webb, a first-time starter representing the same connections as ENGLISH CHANNEL himself–owner James Scatuorchio and trainer Todd Pletcher–was well-touted before debuting in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on the grass. Going postward as the 3-2 pick in the $56,000 event, Captain Webb secured a good tracking position along the rail in third before switching wide to challenge on the far turn. On even terms at the quarter pole, he spurted clear to “an insurmountable lead,” said track announcer Tom Durkin, and cruised home safe by 2 1/2 lengths. Captain Webb was bred by Scatuorchio, and his victory was reminiscent of ENGLISH CHANNEL’s debut win. Back in August of 2004, ENGLISH CHANNEL rallied to take a 1 1/16-mile grass event for Scatuorchio and Pletcher en route to a brilliant career that saw him win six Grade 1 contests, bank over $5.3 million and be crowned champion turf horse. ENGLISH CHANNEL is also the sire of Ann of the Dance, who made an improbable late run to take an Arlington maiden in June.
