Freshman sire ENGLISH CHANNEL got his first stakes horse at Monmouth Park when the 2-year-old gelding Channel Quest finished second in the Continental Mile S. Aug. 20. A maiden making his route and turf debut, Channel Quest sat in a mid-pack position and launched a belated rally in the stretch to prove clearly second best in the $66,000 added-money event. He is owned and trained by Amy Tarrant. The Maryland-bred Channel Quest, produced by a Coronado’s Quest half-sister to millionaire Maltese Superb and GSW Prime Directive, was bred by Carol A. Kaye-Garcia and Barbara Smith. ENGLISH CHANNEL is currently the sixth-leading freshman sire in the country by earnings, and is the sire of the exciting Saratoga maiden special weight winners Optimizer and Captain Webb, and of the Arlington Park allowance winner Ann of the Dance.
