“Patsy Symons’ Gitchee Goomie, a multiple stakes winner, broke through on Tuesday with her first graded score in the $250,000 Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap (G3) at Parx Racing.

Ridden by Alan Garcia, the five-year-old City Zip mare rallied from off of the pace in midstretch and won by a half-length over fellow New York-bred Hessonite, who also closed late to finish a half-length ahead of Julia’s Love (GB) in second.

Gitchee Goomie covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.23 on firm turf as the 3.10-to-1 second wagering choice in a field of eight well-matched fillies and mares. She captured the Grade 3 at Parx after finishing second to Daveron (Ger) in last year’s edition.
