As sires fade in and out of fashion, it’s can be easy to overlook what’s right in front of you.
Such is the case with BELONG TO ME, one of the all-time best sire sons of Danzig.
Consider the numbers: the sire of horses like champion Forever Together, Jersey Girl, Circle of Life and Lucky Roberto has 76 career stakes winners, including 11 Grade/Group 1 winners and 31 graded/group winners.
BELONG TO ME’s 6% stakes winners/foals looks especially good when compared to other, much more expensive sons of Danzig.
War Front, an $80,000 sire, or 40x what BELONG TO ME stands for, is siring 7% stakes winners/foals.
Exchange Rate, who stands for six times BELONG TO ME’s fee, has an identical 6% stakes winners/foal strike rate.
Hard Spun, who stands for 30 times BELONG TO ME’s fee, is siring 5% stakes winners.
(To make sure we’re comparing apples to apples, all stats Northern Hemisphere and don’t reflect BELONG TO ME’s 15 Southern Hemisphere SWs. Stats according to Jan. 28 Equineline report via stallionregister.com.)
That’s a lot of sire power for a 2013 advertised fee of $5,000. And if you think BELONG TO ME’s slowing down, think again.
According to The BloodHorse, BELONG TO ME was the sire of 28 starters from a small 2009 crop. Of those, three are already stakes winners at major tracks:
• Leading Astray, 3yo filly, winner of the $175,000 G3 Pucker Up S. and $65,000 Hatoof S. at Arlington Park, placed in the G2 Mrs. Revere S. at Churchill and G3 Pin Oak Valley View S. at Keeneland
• Beeker Street, 3yo colt, winner of the $150,000 Queenston S. at Woodbine
• Man Stuff, 3yo filly, winner of the $105,000 Sweet Brian Too S. at Woodbine
BELONG TO ME is also the sire of My Option, who as a 2yo filly in 2012 was a 4 1/2-length winner of the $125,000 Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante S. at Hawthorne.
BELONG TO ME’s 4yo son Kyma, meanwhile, won the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup H. in 2012, while the always tough Mister Marti Gras placed in the $1 million G2 Charles Town Classic S., G3 Washington Park H., G3 Arlington H., G3 Eclipse S., etc.
At the sales, BELONG TO ME was the sire of such horses as Sophie’s Secret, a $150,000 OBSAPR grad who was on the board in each of her first four starts in California maiden special company for trainer John Sadler.
And BELONG TO ME, of course, is also distinguishing himself as a broodmare sire. His daughters have produced, among others, the Grade 1 winners Jersey Town, Lookin At Lucky (SMART STRIKE), Circular Quay, Nereid (ROCK HARD TEN), etc.
Forget fashion – want to breed to one of Danzig’s best sire sons? BELONG TO ME can belong to you.
