Horses by Lane’s End sires are well situated to sweep the sophomore divisions of Canada’s Sovereign Awards, the nominees for which were announced Tuesday, Jan. 22. ENGLISH CHANNEL’s dynamic son Strait of Dover led the nominees in the Champion Three-Year-Old Male category. The Canyon Farms homebred went a perfect three-for-three in 2012. He wired a field of first-level allowance foes going seven panels in April, then came back to romp by 6 1/2 lengths in an eye-catching victory in the $150,000 Marine S. in May. In the nation’s premier race for 3-year-olds and the opening leg of Canada’s Triple Crown, the $1 million Queen’s Plate, Strait of Dover again put up a tremendous effort. Under Justin Stein, he every step of the way to win the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:01.99, the fastest Queen’s Plate time in 22 years and the second-fastest time since the race was moved to its current distance in 1957. Strait of Dover is trained by Danny Vella.
In the Champion Three-Year-Old Filly category, John Oxley’s Dixie Strike, by DIXIE UNION, will be tough to beat. Trained by Mark Casse, the daughter of the SMART STRIKE mare Noble Strike ran third in the Queen’s Plate, then defeated males in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the $500,000 Prince of Wales S. Earlier in the year, Dixie Strike won the $150,000 Florida Oaks and won off by 3 3/4-lengths over the classy Tu Endie Wei in the G3 Selene S. Later in the fall, she lost little in defeat when she finished third to a pair of champions in My Miss Aurelia and Questing (GB) in the G1 Cotillion S. at Parx.
Good luck to these horses and their connections!
