The A.P. INDY sire line continued to be a dominant force in American racing in 2012. Sires like Tapit, Malibu Moon, Bernardini, Flatter, Pulpit, Congrats, Sky Mesa, his Horse of the Year son MINESHAFT, and, of course, A.P. INDY himself, accounted for some of the nation’s most prestigious races.
Looking for the next star to emerge from the line? Take a look at DISCREETLY MINE. Astute buyers sure did at the recent bloodstock sales, when weanlings from the brilliant G1 King’s Bishop S. hero’s first crop were offered.
At Keeneland, youngsters by DISCREETLY MINE were acquired by the likes of:
• Hidden Brook (a half-brother to champion Murjan o/o SW Miss Jeanne Cat)
• Indian Creek (a grandson of champion Committed from immediate family of ENGLISH CHANNEL)
• Bugle Hill Farm (a colt o/o half to GSW Dance Away Capote)
• Passion Stable (a colt o/o half to the Grade 1 runners The Seven Seas & Royal Gem)
• Epona Bloodstock (a colt o/o half to SW & GSP Daniel My Brother & MSP Tashdeed)
• Greatness Bloodstock (a colt o/o SW Code of Ethics, a full to GSW One and Twenty)
Mares in foal to DISCREETLY MINE, meanwhile, included Deja Blu, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner and $4.8 million broodmare Santa Catarina who was hammered down to Siena Farm for $230,000.
DISCREETLY MINE carried unimpeachable credentials to the breeding shed in his first season at stud in 2011. The son of MINESHAFT was a brilliantly fast colt whose wins included the sire-making King’s Bishop S. at Saratoga. He also had the pedigree, being a son of the Grade 1 winner Pretty Discreet and a half-brother to G1 Cigar Mile hero and current red-hot leading third-crop sire Discreet Cat, sire of the sophomore standouts Out of Bounds, Discreet Dancer, and Mamma Kimbo. So it’s no big surprise that he was hugely popular, covering 130 mares in his first year at Lane’s End and 119 in his second year.
Recently, we chatted with some owners and buyers of some of DISCREETLY MINE’s first foals (which are now yearlings in 2013). Here are some of their enthusiastic comments:
From George Bolton, “I have a lot of faith in DISCREETLY MINE who is beautifully bred and had speed to burn. I have a cracking colt by him out of a mare that has already produced a multiple Grade 1 winner.”
From Martha Jane Mulholland, “We sold a grand looking DISCREETLY MINE in January and purchased another lovely individual privately. John and I believe the stallion has a bright future at stud.”
From Deuce Greathouse: “Our filly is correct with good bone and all the right angles.”
From David O’Farrell, Ocala Stud: “We have two outstanding yearlings by him out of two of our best mares. They are straightforward and very athletic. We are excited about DISCREETLY MINE’s potential as a sire. We have and will continue to give him our full support.”
From Dan Hall, Hidden Brook Farm: “Our colt is a very well balanced individual with a great walk and presence.”
From Ricky Payne, Bugle Hill Farm Manager: “Bugle Hill is a new farm and we are interested in establishing a competitive racing stable as well as being commercial. DISCREETLY MINE makes a lot of sense to us on both fronts. He is a well bred horse that had a lot of speed. Also, we have two yearlings by him, both of which have plenty of scope and balance. We couldn’t be happier with the way they are developing.”
From Anna Ford, Robsham Stable Manager: “We are extremely happy with our first DISCREETLY MINE colt. He has the same athletic look as his father and is of good size and bone. Overall, he is an exceptional individual.”
From Ed Gaylord: “We are thrilled with our DISCREETLY MINE colt. He is handsome and very well balanced. Looking forward to his racing career.”
From Epona Bloodstock: “Our DISCREETLY MINE colt is an athletic, quality individual, with a great walk.”
From Bob McCann: “I love DISCREETLY MINE. He had speed, could carry it two turns and has a terrific pedigree. In my opinion he has all of the tools to make a sire. The yearling I have with Pope McLean is terrific. He has a great top line and is very athletic and correct. I couldn’t be more pleased with him. Another mare I bred to the stallion is due to foal soon and I can’t wait to see that one.”
