As a racehorse, ENGLISH CHANNEL registered his first graded stakes victory over the lawn at Colonial Downs, and his offspring are excelling over that surface, as well. On June 22, his 4yo daughter Channel Lady added a second graded win to her resume in the track’s G3 Edward P. Evans All Along S.

Channel Lady, winner of last year’s Stardusk S. at Aqueduct and the G3 Suwanee River S. at Gulfstream earlier this season, is owned by James Scatuorchio and J.J. Pletcher and trained by Todd Pletcher, She was bred by Scatuorchio, Wayne Morris, Bluegrass Hall and Kaygar Stable.

She became ENGLISH CHANNEL’s third stakes performer in June. Two-time stakes winner The Pizza Man ran second in the $100,000 Black Tie Affair S. June 15, a week after the hickory-tough Optimizer finished second to Point of Entry in the $500,000 G1 Woodford Reserve Manhattan H. on the Belmont undercard. Also runner-up to Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic S. on Derby Day, Optimizer, a Calumet/Bluegrass Hall homebred, was coming off a third-place try in the $300,000 G2 Dixie S. on Preakness Day.

The Dixie was won by another Calumet/Bluegrass Hall homebred by ENGLISH CHANNEL in Skyring. Like Optimizer a 4yo colt from ENGLISH CHANNEL’s first crop, Skyring led every step to win the Dixie under Gary Stevens, who would go on to take the Preakness one race later with another Calumet runner in Oxbow. The win came exactly one year after Skyring won his first stakes, the James W. Murphy S., in the same wire-to-wire fashion at Pimlico. The Dixie was Skyring’s first graded tally, and pushed his earnings to $424,148.

ENGLISH CHANNEL is now the sire of a champion, four graded winners and nine stakes winners from his first crop! Among a deep group of U.S.-based third-crop sires, he is:

• #3 sire by cumulative earnings
• #3 sire cumulative stakes winners (9)
• #3 sire by cumulative graded winners (4)

• #3 sire by cumulative stakes horses (18)

In 2013, meanwhile, ENGLISH CHANNEL the #1 NA third-crop sire by graded winners (3)!
