The second weekend in October was a maiden special weight bonanza for 2yos by Lane’s End sires.
LEMON DROP KID had two nice juvenile winners on the weekend. At Keeneland, his impeccably bred daughter Aurelia’s Belle, who traces to the blue hen Courtly Dee, looked the part of the 8-5 favorite when she took her debut in rallying fashion for the Wayne Catalano barn, while at Calder, LEMON DROP KID’s son Brilliantlee, in his turf debut, rallied into slow fractions to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
CITY ZIP had a pair of fillies who graduated going six furlongs–both as the favorite. On opening day at Keeneland, Ruslana, the only filly in a crowded 10-horse field, lived up to her 8-5 favoritism to win a $49,000 Msw by 4 1/4 lengths. That came a day after Loya, at odds of 1-5, won off by 3 1/2 lengths at Hawthorne.
At Belmont Park, MINESHAFT’s 2yo daughter Miss Loretta Lynn dazzled in her unveiling going six furlongs on the turf. The Steve Klesaris-trained filly stalked the pace and rallied past to win in 1:08 4/5. Meanwhile, over Belmont’s main track, LANGFUHR’s 2yo son Swell launched a last-to-first rally in a 5 1/2-furlong, $60,000 Msw.
SMART STRIKE also had an impressive winner at Keeneland. His 2yo daughter Fawaarek, a Shadwell homebred from the top mare Golden Apples (Ire), rallied from mid-pack to win by daylight.
Keep an eye out for yearlings by Lane’s End sires at next week’s Fasig-Tipton October Sale! No doubt there will be some exciting 2yos in that group come next year.
