Led by his Grade 1-winning son Bond Holder, MINESHAFT had another strong year in 2013 as he confirmed his status as a torch-bearer of the A.P. INDY line. The sire of the likes of DISCREETLY MINE, It’s Tricky and Dialed In—all Grade 1-winning 3-year-olds—will have another top sophomore prospect in Reddam Racing’s Bond Holder, who broke his maiden in the G1 FrontRunner S. at Santa Anita last fall before finishing a good fourth in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

MINESHAFT’s 2013 runners also include the talented Nellie Cashman, the 3yo filly who won the G3 Virginia Oaks. Nellie Cashman was DQ’d from the win in the G2 Woodford Reserve Lake Placid S., and also ran third in the G3 Pin Oak Valley View S.

Here’s a look at MINESHAFT’s 2013 by the numbers:

  • 6 SWs
  • 3 GSWs
  • 11 SHs
  • Yearling Average: $91,266
  • Yearlings included $400,000 half-brother to G1SW Authenticity & $310,000 son of SW Hidden Cat (Storm Cat)
  • Other yearlings brought $230,000, $220,000, $185,000, etc.
  • In-foal mares averaged $268,900
  • In-foal mares included $1.1 million dam of Palace Malice (CURLIN), the $710,000 champion and Group 1 winner Casablanca Smile (Chi), the $450,000 Gloat, a half to GSW Parading, etc.

The appeal of MINESHAFT has always been that he gets horses of terrific quality. Horses like Fly Down, Nehro, Nates Mineshaft, Redding Colliery, Cool Coal Man and Casino Drive. That quality is best illustrated in MINESHAFT’s Average Earnings Index figures. With an AEI of 2.02, his runners make twice the national average, and in that category, MINESHAFT outranks Giant’s Causeway (1.85), Kitten’s Joy (1.82), Tiznow (1.81), Bernardini (1.81), Malibu Moon (1.78), etc.

Bill Oppenheim’s APEX rankings tell a similar story. His ‘A Runner Index’ is an outstanding 2.72, better than Dynaformer (2.68), Tapit (2.64), Unbridled’s Song (2.63), Kitten’s Joy (2.61), Distorted Humor (2.32), Malibu Moon (2.21), etc.

Because MINESHAFT has never had big books to swell his raw numbers, it’s important to look at the facts closely when judging his merits. For example, despite standing for less than a third of what Malibu Moon ($95,000) stands for, MINESHAFT matches or exceeds that one’s figures in many cruicial metrics.
