March 10, 2014 – March roared like a lion for several Lane’s End sires this past weekend.

CURLIN, the leading third-crop sire by earnings, stakes winners (4) and winners (24), continues to be one of the nation’s hottest sires. At Gulfstream, his Classic-winning son Palace Malice kicked off his 4yo campaign with a gutsy win in the G2 Gulfstream Park H. Sent off the crowd’s choice in a deep field, he pressed the pace three wide, gained and then lost the lead in the stretch, and battled back to take the one-mile test in 1:33.80.

“He ran every step of the way and put himself in the game early, which we wanted to do,” said Todd Pletcher, who conditions Palace Malice for Dogwood Stable. “It’s pretty rare you have a horse that can win the Belmont S. and also run 1:33 and change and stalk solid fractions. It tells you how good of a horse he is and how much quality he has.”

Maiden wins don’t get more impressive than Diversy Harbor’s late-charging victory on debut at Santa Anita Jan. 26—which earned the 3yo filly TDN Rising Star status—and on Saturday she quickly added a first black-type win, rallying to capture the one-mile China Doll S. for Glen Hill Farm and trainer Tom Proctor.

At the OBS March under-tack previews, meanwhile, a 2yo colt by CURLIN posted the fastest quarter-mile breeze of the sale when gassed the distance in :20 3/54. Named Ocean Night, he sells from the consignment of de Meric Sales as Hip 305.

CURLIN wasn’t the only Lane’s End stallion to star on the weekend. His own sire, SMART STRIKE, was represented by the progressive Cloud Scapes, who won her third straight and doubled her graded tally with a narrow victory in the G3 Hillsborough S. at Tampa. In her previous start, she won the G3 Endeavor S. for Pin Oak and trainer Graham Motion.

At Laurel, LEMON DROP KID’s 3yo colt Kid Cruz arrived on the scene late to win the $100,000 Private Terms S. Owned by Vina Del Mar Thoroughbreds LLC & Black Swan Stable and trained by Linda Rice, he’s now won two of four starts.

Congrats to the connections of these exciting runners!
