Even by his own high standards, LEMON DROP KID is having a career year. Ranked #4 on the General Sire List, Lane’s End perennial standout already has six graded winners in 2014–only CANDY RIDE (ARG) and Tapit have more–and is in the midst of an outstanding summer that’s seen his offspring win four graded races in the last four weeks.
On July 19 at Saratoga, LEMON DROP KID’s daughter Somali Lemonade collected a much-deserved first Grade 1 in the Diana S. The streaking 5yo, winner of the G3 Gallorette H. at Pimlico in May, just failed to last in a quickly run G1 Just a Game S. on Belmont Stakes Day, and was taken off the pace this time by Luis Saez, whose well-timed move got them to the wire ahead of Grade 1 winner Stephanie’s Kitten. Caroline Forgason’s impeccably bred racemare has now earned over $950,000 under the care of trainer Michael Matz.
On the same day, James Miller’s Aurelia’s Belle, a 3yo filly by LEMON DROP KID, got her second graded tally on the year in the G3 Arlington Park Oaks. Trained by Wayne Catalano, Aurelia’s Belle also won the G3 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway in March and has placed in the G2 Davona Dale, G2 Forward Gal, G3 Old Hat and G3 Regret S. in 2014.
A week earlier, on closing day at Belmont Park, LEMON DROP KID’s son Hangover Kid got his first graded win in the G2 Bowling Green H. Last year’s G1 United Nations third came with a spirited bid in the final furlong and defeated the well-regarded Grandeur (Fr) by a head. The New York-bred has now been first or second in 14 of 24 and earned over $625,000. Jason Servis trains Hangover Kid for Four Tags Stable.
Kicking things off for LEMON DROP KID this summer was the progressive 3yo colt Kid Kruz. On July 5, the Linda Rice-trained youngster got up in the final strides to take the G3 Dwyer S. by 3/4 lengths at Belmont Park. It was his fourth win in five starts, following on the heels of open-length victories in the Private Terms S., Federico Tesio S. and Easy Goer S. Rice said the G2 Jim Dandy S. could be next for the Vina Del Mar Thoroughbreds, et al, colorbearer.
Keep an eye out for yearlings by LEMON DROP KID at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. He has three catalogued: Hip 116 (colt), Hip 136 (filly), and Hip 156 (colt).
