LANE’S END STARS SHINE AT THE SPA

Aug. 4, 2010: Yearlings by Lane’s End sires and members of our consignment were hot commodities at the Fasig-Tipton Selected Sale in Saratoga, which concluded its two-day stand last night.

The top-priced horse of the boutique auction was an A.P. INDY colt out of sprint champion Maryfield (Elusive Quality) who was knocked down to Besilu Stables for $1.2 million. Todd Pletcher signed the ticket on behalf of Ben Leon’s organization. Earlier, Bobby Flay went to $625,000 to land a daughter of A.P. INDY --Malka.

One of the stars of the show was our own SMART STRIKE, whose Lookin At Lucky offered a sterling advertisement for his sire by winning the G1 Haskell Invitational a day before the sale began. Leading the charge at Saratoga was a SMART STRIKE--Sluice colt who was purchased by John Ferguson for $750,000. Lane’s End sold a pair of SMART STRIKEs for top dollar. A filly out of Code Book went to Ferguson for $400,000, while another filly out of Grade I winner Leave Me Alone made $400,000 on Donato Lanni’s bid. Lanni purchased Lookin At Lucky as a juvenile. Another filly by SMART STRIKE, out of Hummingbird Red, was secured by Glen Hill farm for $400,000.

Yearlings by ROCK HARD TEN were also popular. Three sold from three offered for an average of $328,333. They included a Lane’s End-consigned son of Belong to Sea (BELONG TO ME) who went to Live Oak Plantation for $450,000. Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Farm paid $325,000 for colt by ROCK HARD TEN out of Appealing Storm, while My Meadowview paid $210,000 for a colt out of Fiddlin Devon.

Other yearlings to sell well at Saratoga by Lane’s End sires included:

CANDY RIDE (ARG)--Turkish Gypsy colt for $270,000 (purchased by Patrice Miller, EQB);
DIXIE UNION--Lerici colt for $400,000 (purchased by Let’s Go Stable);
LEMON DROP KID--Worthy Cat colt for $250,000 (purchased by Ben Glass);
GULCH--Weekend Storm full-brother to MG1SW Court Vision from our consignment for $330,000 (purchased by IEAH Stables).

In all, four of the top 15 horses at Saratoga hailed from the Lane’s End draft. Others included a Street Cry (Ire) colt out of My Boston Gal who went to John Ferguson for $650,000. Lane’s End also sold a Medaglia d’Oro--Melisma filly to Spendthrift Farm for $450,000 and an Empire Maker--Half A.P. filly to MSTS for $435,000.

Congratulations to all the breeders and owners who supported us at Saratoga and best of racing luck to all the buyers!

BIG WEEKEND FOR LANE'S END SALES GRADS!

June 19, 2010: Runners like Quality Road have already made it a big year for Lane's End sales graduates, and this afternoon, fellow grads Shared Account and Golden Itez added to the laurels. From PLEASANTLY PERFECT's first crop, Shared Account, a $170,000 Keeneland September grad from 2007, was the 2-1 crowd's choice to take the G3 All Along S. at Colonial Downs. Smartly placed in fourth in the early going, the four-year-old Graham Motion trainee came calling in the lane and was going away late to win by a length. Bloodstock agent Bob Feld purchased Shared Account on behalf of owner Sagamore Farm. Meanwhile, out in California, the three-year-old Golden Itez enjoyed a breakout win in the G3 Affirmed S. at Hollywood Park. A $240,000 yearling from our 2008 September consignment, Golden Itez stalked off the leaders and dug in late to post the half-length score. Trained by Ron Ellis, the dark bay is owned by Jay Em Ess. Congratulations to the connections of both horses!

LANE’S END: SALES GRADS SUCCEED

The road to success runs through a Lane’s End sale consignment. That’s been the case year in and year out for the past 25 years, and 2010 has been another fruitful season for horses who sold under our banner. Leading the way is the top-ranked handicap horse in the country, Quality Road. Offered by Lane’s End at the 2007 Keeneland September Sale by his breeder Ned Evans, Quality Road set new track records last year while winning the G1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream and G2 Amsterdam S. at Saratoga, and continued his record-setting ways when lowering his own track record in Gulfstream’s G1 Donn H. earlier this year. Given a breather off that, Quality Road returned in the G1 Met Mile at Belmont May 31 and unleashed a tour de force, taking the race in wire-to-wire fashion in 1:33 flat. He then battled to finish just a head short in the Grade 1 Whitney H. Quality Road has now won seven of 11 and banked over $1.7 million.

On the sophomore scene, Lane’s End grads include a number of horses who have made noise on the Triple Crown trail. The progressive Fly Down (MINESHAFT), an $80,000 yearling from the 2008 September Sale, ran away from Drosselmeyer in the G2 Dwyer S. at Belmont, then was getting to that foe when second in the G1 Belmont S.

Awesome Act, a $240,000 September yearling, was one of the crowd’s favorites for the G1 Kentucky Derby after an impressive win in the G3 Gotham S. and third to Eskendereya in the G1 Wood Memorial S. He suffered a minor injury in the race and is slated to return later in the year.

Endorsement, meanwhile, a $450,000 September yearling, was himself highly regarded for the Derby after a powerful three-length tally over Conveyance in the G3 Sunland Derby. The WinStar Farm colorbearer has already earned $430,000 during his young career.

Other 2010 stakes horses hailing from Lane’s End Sales include Court Vision (GULCH), who collected his third Grade 1 win in as many years in the Gulfstream Park Turf H. The five-year-old is approaching the $2-million mark in earnings. Strike a Deal (SMART STRIKE) pushed his earnings past $1 million with a victory in the G2 Dixie S. at Pimlico, while Baletti (GULCH) captured his first graded race in the G3 Fort Marcy S. at Aqueduct in April. Lane’s End also sold the 2010 stakes winners Bonnie Blue Flag (MINESHAFT), King of Dixie (KINGMAMBO), Peppi Knows (STEPHEN GOT EVEN), La Verita, Marie de Medici, etc.

PERFECT PIMLICO PEDIGREES

May 15, 2010: Trainer Bob Baffert’s Lookin at Lucky exacted a measure of revenge and SMART STRIKE notched his second G1 Preakness S. winner when the Champion Juvenile Colt powered home to an impressive victory in the second leg of the Triple Crown today. Coming off a disappointing sixth-place effort as the favorite in the G1 Kentucky Derby, when he was slammed hard in the early going, Lookin at Lucky stalked in mid-pack, made an eye-catching move on the turn and gamely ran down STEPHEN GOT EVEN’s First Dude for the win. First Dude, third in the G1 Blue Grass S. in his last start, goes next in the G1 Belmont S.

Lookin at Lucky is now a winner of seven of his 10 starts, with all but one of those victories coming in graded events and four coming against Grade 1 company. He has now earned over $2.1 million. SMART STRIKE accounted for his first Preakness three years ago, when CURLIN narrowly beat the Derby hero Street Sense. SMART STRIKE, a two-time leading sire, currently sits in third on the General Sire List.

Lane’s End sires produced the Preakness 1-2, and can also boast of being the dam sires of that exacta. BELONG TO ME’s Private Feeling is the dam of Lookin at Lucky; SMART STRIKE’s Run Sarah Run is the dam of First Dude.

SMART STRIKE’s hot run continued on the Preakness undercard. In the G2 Dixie S., the Lane’s End-bred and -sold Strike a Deal, a son of the DIXIELAND BAND mare Shag, became racing’s latest millionaire when he won the nine-furlong race in front-running fashion. He defeated A.P. INDY’s Grade 1 winner Just as Well in the process. Strike a Deal has been first or second in 12 of 20 and banked $1,052,341.

310 AND COUNTING

Feb. 9, 2010: With some 310 stakes winners beginning their careers in a Lane’s End consignment, it isn’t surprising that some of the most talented horses of the last 25 years have hailed from one of our drafts. Horses of the Year A.P. INDY and SAINT LIAM were sales grads. So too were Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch, Preakness Stakes hero Summer Squall, and six Belmont Stakes winners: Bet Twice, A.P. INDY, Thunder Gulch, LEMON DROP KID, Jazil and Rags to Riches.

Champion juveniles Hold That Tiger, Law Society, Stevie Wonderboy and Storm Song join Champion Three-Year-Olds Wait a While and Whipper, and Champion Older Horses like LEMON DROP KID, as former members of a Lane’s End consignment.

In fact, no fewer than 20 Lane’s End sales grads have gone on to championship honors, while 41 of our grads have earned success at the Grade or Group 1 level.

In 2009, we were represented by four Grade 1 winners, including the $3.9 million yearling Mr. Sidney, while horses of the caliber of Quality Road, Court Vision and Diamondrella (GB) continue to underscore why the best buyers in the business being their shopping at Lane’s End. Quality Road recently lowered his own track record while annexing Gulfstream’s nine-furlong, G1 Donn H. in 1:47.49. Quality Road originally established the course record while winning the 2009 G1 Florida Derby. On the same afternoon of Quality Road’s Donn victory, Court Vision walked away with his third Grade 1 triumph in the G1 Gulfstream Park Turf H.

2009 SALES WRAP UP

Jan. 1, 2010: Lane’s End has been a leading consignor for over two decades, and Grade 1 winners like Court Vision, Diamondrella (GB), Quality Road, and Mr. Sidney helped carry our banner proudly in 2009. Each of those passed through a Lane’s End consignment as a yearling, and they underscore why buyers have confidence in Lane’s End when it comes to finding quality. Those buyers, in turn, help Lane’s End’s clients realize top dollar on their horses. The was in evidence at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, when a colt by Storm Cat--Onaga who was consigned by Lane’s End realized $2.8 million, the highest price for a yearling in the U.S. in 2009. John Ferguson was the winning bidder.

According to The Blood-Horse, Lane’s End sold a total of 194 yearlings for $23,914,000 in 2009, ranking us third by all consignors by gross. Importantly, the average price for a Lane’s End-sold yearling was $123,268, which put us above gross leader Taylor Made ($95,546 avg.) and runner-up Eaton Sales ($98,396 avg.) by that measure.

In fact, Lane’s End was the only yearling consignor in the nation to have sold more than 100 yearlings and have those yearlings average more than $105,000. Lane’s End was also third-ranked in the nation by weanling gross and by broodmare gross.

Some highlights of our 2009 consignments include:

Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale

• $1 million Bernardini--Crystal Music colt, to Ken McPeek
• $875,000 SMART STRIKE--Code Book filly, to John Ferguson

Keeneland September Sale

• $775,000 Dynaformer--Awe That colt, to Brushwood Stable
• $750,000 Storm Cat--Moon Safari colt, to Westrock Stables
• $700,000 Dynaformer--Cozzy Corner, to Shadwell Estate Co.

Keeneland November Sale

• $900,000 Loves Me Only (Storm Cat--Monevassia), to Katsumi Yoshida.

Lane’s End would like to sincerely thank all of the breeders, owners and buyers who helped make 2009 another successful year. Best of luck to all in 2010.

2009 WRAP-UP--LANE'S END SALES GRADS ARE WINNING!

Jan. 1, 2010: Lane’s End continues to be one of the leading consignors of Grade 1 winners in 2009, and graduates of our consignments are racking up impressive performances from The Curragh to California and beyond. In 2009, Lane’s End grads include no fewer than 34 stakes winners, with 16 graded winners and four Grade 1 winners!

They include:

• Quality Road. The three-year-old colt soundly beat a top field in the G2 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S., then annexed the G1 Florida Derby while establishing a new track record at Gulfstream for nine furlongs (1:47.72). He lowered another track record when returning to win Saratoga’s 6 1/2-furlong G2 Amsterdam S. in a blazing 1:13.45. A game third in the G1 Shadwell Travers S. at Saratoga, he then was second in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont. Quality Road, offered at the 2007 September Sale, was bred and is owned by longtime Lane’s End client Ned Evans.

• Mr. Sidney. Raised and sold by Lane’s End, Mr. Sidney lived up to his sterling pedigree with a gutsy first Grade 1 victory in the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland. Bred by Hilbert Thoroughbreds, Mr. Sidney was produced by Tomisue's Delight (A.P. INDY), a full-sister to Lane's End's Horse of the Year MINESHAFT. Mr. Sidney was a $3.9 million Keeneland September purchase by Lee Einsidler's Circle E Racing in 2005. He was the third-highest-priced yearling of that year. On July 4th, he added the Grade 2 Firecracker H. to his resume.

• Diamondrella (GB). The Lane’s End-bred turf specialist crafted another fine season, in which she won half of her six starts. In search of her sixth straight victory, the five-year-old rallied from well back to capture Belmont’s G1 Just a Game S. in June over champion Forever Together (BELONG TO ME). Later in the season, she added Keeneland’s G1 First Lady S. to her tally. Diamondrella was a $185,000 Keeneland September Lane’s End grad.

• Court Vision (GULCH). A dual graded stakes winner on the dirt at two and winner of the G1 Hollywood Derby at three, Court Vision returned in 2009 to win the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. He was flying late in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf and finished a very good fourth, beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Goldikova (Ire). Court Vision’s half-sister Smart Surprise (SMART STRIKE) also enjoyed a strong season. The mare, who has been first or second in 15 of 22 lifetime, won four stakes in 2009, including the Hendrie S. at Woodbine. Both Court Vision and Smart Surprise were bred and sold in partnership by Lane’s End.

• Dunkirk. Another bred by Lane’s End and sold for a sale-topping $3.7 million at September, he offered up one of the best performances on Belmont Stakes day when he set a fast pace in the G1 Belmont and fought on to finish second in the 1 1/2-mile Classic. He had earlier run a very good second to Quality Road in the G1 Florida Derby.

• Long Lashes (ROCK HARD TEN). In June, the Lane’s End-sold juvenile filly became the first winner--and first stakes winner--for her freshman sire when she galloped home clear in the Listed Ballygallon Stud S. in her debut at The Curragh. Sold privately to Godolphin, she quickly added Newmarket’s G3 Sweet Solera S.

• Charitable Man (LEMON DROP KID). Stamped himself as an exciting horse when capturing the G2 Futurity S. as a juvenile, then confirmed his ability with a sharp victory in the nine-furlong G2 Peter Pan S., won in 1:47 flat. Mike Ryan purchased Charitable Man for $200,000 out of the 2007 Keeneland September Sale.

• Shared Account (PLEASANTLY PERFECT). The three-year-old filly became her sophomore sire’s first graded stakes winner when she took the G2 Lake Placid S. in impressive fashion. She was then runner-up in both the G1 Garden City Breeders' Cup S. and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. Shared Account, produced by the SMART STRIKE mare Silk N' Sapphire, was a $170,000 September grad.

• Carolyn’s Cat. The William K. Warren colorbearer led every step to win by daylight in the G2 Vagrancy H. in May. Agent Mike Ryan purchased Carolyn’s Cat for $650,000 at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.

• Vistoso. Produced by the multiple graded stakes-placed A.P. INDY mare Charmed Gift and bred by long-time Lane’s End client Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership, the three-year-old colt has collected three Group 1s, including the G1 Clasico Cameonato and G1 Clasico Anahuac.

• Lane’s End also sold a number of promising two-year-olds, including Thiskyhasnolimit, winner of the G3 Iroquois S.; Dixie Band (DIXIE UNION), winner of the Arlington-Washington Futurity; and Citrus Kid (LEMON DROP KID), winner of the Dover S. and third in the G2 Remsen S.

LANE’S END SALES HOT AT THE SPA

Aug. 12, 2009: On a pair of sultry, humid nights at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale, prospects from the Lane’s End Sales consignment only served to heat things up even further. The action was headed by hip 204, a Storm Cat three-parts brother to Lane’s End’s own ARAGORN who sold to John Ferguson for a sale-topping $2.8 million. Ferguson outlasted a determined challenge from D. Wayne Lukas to land the striking dark bay, who was bred by Summer Wind Farm.

2008: NOVEMBER SALES

Shadow Cast, who was bred and raced to Grade 1 glory by Bill Farish, was one of the top-selling mares at the 2008 Keeneland November Sale and topped another strong Lane’s End consignment. The seven-year-old mare was hammered down to Darley’s John Ferguson for $2.3 million on the first day of selling. Two months earlier, Ferguson had purchased Shadow Cast’s A.P. INDY yearling filly for $1 million at Keeneland September. At Keeneland November, Lane’s End sold a total of 158 horses for $14,036,300.

Just prior to that sale, Lane's End sold another of its homebreds for $2.3 million. At Fasig-Tipton’s November Sale, the Lane’s End-consigned Private Gift was knocked down to Mt. Brilliant Broodmares LLC. The stakes-winning Private Gift is a half-sister to Lane’s End’s G1 Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Status (A.P. INDY) and our multiple graded stakes winner Alumni Hall (A.P. INDY).

BUY FROM THE BEST

January 2009-2008 WRAP-UP: In nearly every division, horses that sold from Lane’s End sale consignments made their mark on racing in 2008. In fact, no fewer than 31 stakes winners were Lane’s End graduates! That included 15 group/graded stakes winners and three Grade I winners: Frost Giant (G1 Suburban H.), Wait a While (G1 Yellow Ribbon S.) and Court Vision (G1 Hollywood Derby). The latter was also bred by Lane’s End, and is from the top family of A.P. INDY, et al.

Lane’s End sold a pair of leading 2009 Kentucky Derby prospects as yearlings, both by Lane’s End’s own LEMON DROP KID. Charitable Man, winner of the G2 Futurity S., and Break Water Edison, winner of the G3 Nashua S., were both part of Lane’s End’s Keeneland September consignment in 2007.

Other 2008 stars sold by Lane’s End include Cool Coal Man, the G2 Fountain of Youth S. winner by MINESHAFT; the millionaire Seaside Retreat, co-bred and owned by Lane’s End and winner of this year’s G2 Nijinsky II S.; and Strike a Deal, the son of SMART STRIKE who recently romped in the G2 Red Smith H.

Since we first started selling, Lane's End has consigned more than 292 stakes winners to public auction. Champions and Grade 1 winners sold by Lane's End include Horses of the Year A.P. INDY and SAINT LIAM, as well as champions LEMON DROP KID, THUNDER GULCH, and STORM SONG. (Click here to see our top horses sold).

In 2007, Lane's End had 31 stakes winning sales graduates, and 13 of those were graded winners. Head of the class is Rags to Riches who justified her $1.9 million price tag by taking four Grade 1 races this year: the Belmont S., the Kentucky Oaks, the Santa Anita Oaks, and the Las Virgenes S. This three-year-old daughter of our top stallion A.P. INDY went from a maiden win to a Grade 1 in just three starts. She was bred by Skara Glen Stables and is a half-sister to classic winner JAZIL, also a Lane's End sales grad. Grade 2 winner Saint Anddan is yet another Lane's End sales grad sired by A.P. INDY.

Other Grade 1 winning sales graduates are Lear's Princess, winner of the Grade 1 Gazelle S. for West Point Thoroughbreds, and Premium Tap by our own PLEASANT TAP. Grade 2 winner Court Vision is by Lane's End stallion GULCH.

Another 2007 Lane's End sales grad is Ravel who won the Grade 3 Sham S., for the racing team of Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, who also owns Rags to Riches. RAVEL was bred by G. Watts and Louise Humphrey and A.P. INDY is the broodmare sire of this nice three-year-old colt. The third Lane's End stakes winning grad this year is BARKLEY SOUND who is by our great sire DIXIELAND BAND and was co-bred by Lane's End with Milton and Beth Hendry. This three-year-old colt took the Pasco S. at Tampa in late January. Last year's champion three-year-old filly WAIT A WHILE, a Lane's End bred and sold Grade 1 winner, returned in '07 to take the graded Honey Fox H. in her first start. Other 2007 Lane's End sales grads with graded victories are Premium Tap (G1), Sahara Heat, Time to Get Even, Norman Invader, The Leopard, and Bridge Game.

He entered stud at Lane's End in 2006. Other top performers were STEVIE WONDERBOY who dominated the field in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was named Champion 2-Year-Old Colt, Group 1 Winner WHIPPER, Grade 1 winner SWEET TALKER, ORATORY, who set a new stakes record in the Grade 2 Peter Pan, and DON’T GET MAD, who also set a new stakes record in the graded Northern Dancer Breeders’ Cup S. Other 2002 stakes winning Lane's End sales graduates were SIXTYONE MARGAUX, who took the Serena's Song S. at Monmouth, PREMEDITATION, who captured the $100,000 Alysheba Breeders' Cup, LINE RIDER, ASONG FOR BILLY, and two-year-old ONEOFTHEBIRDBOYS.

Also of note in 2002 was the win by first-time starter VAN NISTELROOY on July 14 at The Curragh. This 2yo colt was the highest priced yearling at the 2001 September sale at $6.4 million. By STORM CAT out of HALORY, this colt was sold by Lane's End to Demi O'Byrne and won for owner Susan Magnier at first asking. On July 27, VAN NISTELROOY earned his first stakes victory in the Flame of Tara Tyros S. at The Curragh and on Aug. 24 he captured the Group 2 Galileo EBF Futurity S.

LANE'S END HAS SOLD 6 BELMONT WINNERS

June 12, 2007: The Belmont S. is commonly called "The Test of the Champion," and few would disagree that the 2007 renewal of the mile-and-a-half Classic was a clash between two horses that truly deserved to be honored with the blanket of carnations. In the end, though, it was the super filly Rags to Riches, replicating the feat of her sire A.P. INDY, who held off SMART STRIKE's son Curlin to become the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont.

With Tiago, by PLEASANT TAP, completing the trifecta, the 2007 Belmont represented a 1-2-3 for Lane’s End sires. What’s more, CAME HOME’s son C P West ran fifth in the grueling Classic. Rags to Riches also becomes the second straight winner of the Belmont to be sold by Lane’s End, following her brother Jazil’s victory in 2006. Both horses were bred by the Gumberg family’s Skara Glen Stables. Lane’s End also consigned their dam, Better Than Honour, to the 2004 Keeneland November sale, where she sold for $2 million.

Remarkably, in the past 20 years, Lane’s End has both raised and sold six Belmont Stakes winners:   Bet Twice (1987); A.P. INDY (1992); Thunder Gulch (by GULCH) (1995); LEMON DROP KID (1999); Jazil (2006); and Rags to Riches (2007).
