BREEDING STOCK SALE SUCCESSES
Nov. 30, 2007: At the conclusion of the major bloodstock sales in Kentucky this November, Lane's End was again near the top of the leading consignors lists. What's more Lane's End's stallions were well represented.
Lane's End consignees made $31,838,100 at the Keeneland November Sale, third-highest among consignors. Those consignees averaged a sparkling $187,282, and featured a total of eight who realized seven figures. They included:
- $3.2-million Kamarinskaya, in foal to KINGMAMBO, purchased by Kern Lillingston Association
- $2.3-million Melhor Ainda, purchased by John Ferguson
- $2-million Lovely Regina, in foal to A.P. INDY, purchased by Padua Stables
At the Fasig-Tipton Selected Mixed Sale, Lane's End sold Grade I winner Indy Five Hundred, by A.P. INDY and in foal to KINGMAMBO, for $3 million; as well as Leave Me Alone, in foal to A.P. INDY, for $1 million.
Those young ladies helped highlight the popularity of mares in foal to Lane's End stallions. A.P. INDY and KINGMAMBO currently rank 1-2 on the TDN's Insta-Tistics list of covering sires in 2007. Of the 10 mares offered in foal to A.P. INDY, seven sold for a staggering average of $2,278,571. His stablemate, KINGMAMBO, was nearly as good. Seven of eight mares in foal to him averaged $2,135,714!
By way of comparison, the third horse on the list, Bernardini, averaged a still very respectable $1,152,000.
SMART STRIKE, meanwhile, has enjoyed a career year and, not surprisingly, mares in foal to the son of Mr. Prospector were sought after by buyers. He ranked fifth on the TDN's covering sires list with seven of eight sold for $844,375.
Young sires ARAGORN (IRE) and ROCK HARD TEN were also popular. Mares carrying member's of Aragorn's first crop averaged $148,166, while ROCK HARD TEN's weanlings averaged $187,500, which led all sires with more than two weanlings sold!

SENSATIONAL SEPTEMBER SALE
Blending the hands-on touch of a boutique outfit with the know-how of a larger operation, Lane's End has garnered the respect of buyers and sellers alike as one of the premier consignors in the business. Throughout the 2007 Keeneland September sale, our superb sales department worked closely with our clients to put forth another outstanding showing at the world's most important yearling auction.
The numbers speak for themselves. At the sale's conclusion, Lane's End had sold a total of 168 horses for a staggering $42,326,500. That was good for second on the consignors list by gross behind a consignor which sold 415 horses, and ahead of a consignor which sold 294 horses. The resulting average for a Lane's End consignee was $251,943, easily putting Lane's End on top of the leading consignors list by average with five or more sold.
The Lane's End draft included the highest priced yearling of the September sale, a $3.7 million Unbridled's Song colt that was knocked down to Coolmore representative Dr. Demi O'Byrne. Out of our own GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Status, the strapping gray colt was bred by Mr. Farish and partners James Elkins and W. Temple Webber, Jr. Secret Status was also responsible for the Storm Cat colt Objectivity, who sold for $6.3 million at September in 2005.
One figure that truly stands out is the number of seven-figure horses Lane's End sold during this year's renewal of Keeneland September. No fewer than 13 Lane's End consignees eclipsed the million-dollar mark, meaning that, of the sale's 32 seven-figure yearlings, 41 percent of them hailed from our draft. Next best on the list was a consignor with six seven-figure yearlings.
Lane's End sires, too, were well-represented at September. Building on what's already been a career year, superstar sire A.P. INDY topped the leading sires list by average, with 23 sons and daughters selling for $19,735,000--an average of $858,043. Second on the list? Lane's End's KINGMAMBO, with an average of $662,500.
Lane's End would like to thank the breeders, sellers and buyers who have supported us and we wish them all the best of luck in the future!

LANE'S END HAS SOLD 6 BELMONT WINNERS
June 12, 2007: The Belmont S. is commonly called "The Test of the Champion," and few would disagree that the 2007 renewal of the mile-and-a-half Classic was a clash between two horses that truly deserved to be honored with the blanket of carnations. In the end, though, it was the super filly Rags to Riches, replicating the feat of her sire A.P. INDY, who held off SMART STRIKE's son Curlin to become the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont.
With Tiago, by PLEASANT TAP, completing the trifecta, the 2007 Belmont represented a 1-2-3 for Lane’s End sires. What’s more, CAME HOME’s son C P West ran fifth in the grueling Classic. Rags to Riches also becomes the second straight winner of the Belmont to be sold by Lane’s End, following her brother Jazil’s victory in 2006. Both horses were bred by the Gumberg family’s Skara Glen Stables. Lane’s End also consigned their dam, Better Than Honour, to the 2004 Keeneland November sale, where she sold for $2 million.
Remarkably, in the past 20 years, Lane’s End has both raised and sold six Belmont Stakes winners: Bet Twice (1987); A.P. INDY (1992); Thunder Gulch (by GULCH) (1995); LEMON DROP KID (1999); Jazil (2006); and Rags to Riches (2007).

LANE'S END AND DERBY WEEKEND 2007
The 133rd editions of the G1 Kentucky Derby and G1 Kentucky Oaks were held this past weekend under the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs, and Lane's End sires figured prominently in both Classics.
Want an Oaks winner? Breed to a Lane's End stallion. That's the message that seems to be emerging after Rags to Riches, a daughter of A.P. INDY, established herself as the best three-year-old filly in the nation
with a facile score in Friday's Oaks. It marked the third straight year the nine-furlong Oaks was won by a daughter of a Lane's End sire, following Lemons Forever (by LEMON DROP KID) last year and Summerly (by former Lane's End sire and A.P. INDY's brother SUMMER SQUALL) in 2005. Rags to Riches, trained by Todd Pletcher, is A.P. INDY's second Oaks heroine, following Lane's End homebred Secret Status's win in 2000. Rags to Riches was raised at Lane's End and was a member of our 2005 Keeneland September consignment before being knocked down to Demi O'Byrne for $1.9 million.
In a thrilling renewal of the Kentucky Derby, Street Sense, who is out of a mare by the 2004 leading broodmare sire DIXIELAND BAND, rallied for the win, with the extremely exciting Curlin, a son of SMART STRIKE who was made the crowd's second choice in just his fourth career start, completing the trifecta. Sedgefield, another son of SMART STRIKE who remarkably was making his first-ever start on conventional dirt, ran a strong fifth. The lightly raced G1 Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago, by PLEASANT TAP, was a late-running seventh in just his fifth career effort. This was actually DIXIELAND BAND's second Derby winner as broodmare sire, following Monarchos in 2001.
On the Derby undercard, Saint Anddan, by A.P. INDY, earned a well-deserved first graded stakes win with a two-length tally in the G2 Churchill Downs S. The Bobby Frankel trainee covered the seven furlongs in 1:22 1/5. Like Rags to Riches, Saint Anddan was sold by Lane's End, for $1.85 million at the 2003 Keeneland September sale.
Other stakes winners on the weekend by Lane's End sires included the three-year-old DIXIE UNION colt Rebel Yeller, a Lane's End-bred and -sold runner who won the Woodlawn S. at Pimlico; and STEPHEN GOT EVEN's son Buddy Got Even, winner of the Timeless Native S. at Arlington.
On Saturday night, Fabulous Strike kept the party going at Mountaineer with an effort that earned him the highest Beyer figure of any horse in 2007. Few have been able to catch the son of SMART STRIKE in his career, and that proved to be case in the five-furlong Panhandle H., which the gelding annexed by a facile 6 1/2 lengths in :57 flat. The four-year-old speedster, who was winning his seventh race in 11 starts, including five stakes, was awarded a spectacular 118 Beyer. SMART STRIKE was also represented last week by Tungsten Strike, winner of England's May 2 G3 Sagaro S. at Ascot.

2006 ECLIPSE AWARDS
Jan. 23, 2007: The 36th Annual Eclipse Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills last night recognized the industry's leading equine athletes, including a pair of stars with Lane's End connections and A.P. INDY in both pedigrees!
Earning the title as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt by a dominating 154-vote margin was Bernardini. The Darley Stable homebred, a son of our two-time leading sire A.P. INDY, secured the honor on the strength of a season that saw him win six of his eight starts, including
the G1 Preakness S., G1 Travers S., and G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. The strapping bay also won the G3 Withers S. and was runner-up to eventual Horse of the Year Invasor in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Also honored last night was Wait a While, who was named Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. Out of an A.P. INDY mare, the gray was bred by a Lane's End partnership, raised at the farm and was sold by Lane's End as a yearling. Wait a While went on to win five of nine races
and banked over $1.2 million in 2006. Her victories last season included a 14-length tally on the dirt in the G2 Davona Dale S. early in the year and, after being moved to the grass, dominating victories in the G1 American Oaks and G1 Yellow Ribbon S. against older fillies and mares.
We at Lane's End would like to extend our sincere congratulations to the connections of all the Eclipse Award winners.

Through November of 2007, Lane's End has 28 stakes winning sales graduates, and 12 of those are graded winners.

This three-year-old daughter of our top stallion A.P. INDY went from a maiden win to a Grade 1 in just three starts. Another Grade 1 winning sales graduate is Lear's Princess, winner of the Grade 1 Gazelle S. for West Point Thoroughbreds. Grade 2 winner Court Vision is by Lane's End stallion GULCH.
Another 2007 Lane's End sales grad is Ravel who won the Grade 3 Sham S., for the racing team of Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, who also owns Rags to Riches. RAVEL was bred by G. Watts and Louise Humphrey and A.P. INDY is the broodmare sire of this nice three-year-old colt. The third Lane's End stakes winning grad this year is BARKLEY SOUND who is by our great sire DIXIELAND BAND and was co-bred by Lane's End with Milton and Beth Hendry. This three-year-old colt took the Pasco S. at Tampa in late January. Last year's champion three-year-old filly WAIT A WHILE, a Lane's End bred and sold Grade 1 winner, returned in '07 to take the graded Honey Fox H. in her first start. Also of note in 2002 was the win by first-time starter VAN NISTELROOY on July 14 at The Curragh. This 2yo colt was the highest priced yearling
at the 2001 September sale at $6.4 million. By STORM CAT out of HALORY, this colt was sold by Lane's End to Demi O'Byrne and won for owner Susan Magnier at first
asking. On July 27, VAN NISTELROOY earned his first stakes victory in the Flame of Tara Tyros S. at The Curragh and on Aug. 24 he captured the Group 2 Galileo EBF
Futurity S.
