The finalists for the 36th annual Sovereign Awards were announced today. A.P. INDY’s son Hotep, a Sam-Son Farm homebred, will vie for honors in the Champion Three-Year-Old Male category. Hotep won the Wando S. and Mobil S. in 2010 and ran a close-up second in the $1 million Queen’s Plate S. in Canada. He has now earned $470,846 for trainer Mark Frostad. Hotep was produced by SMART STRIKE‘s Eye of the Sphynx, the Champion Three-Year-Old Filly in Canada in 2004 whose first foal is 2009 Champion Three-Year-Old Male Eye of the Leopard, also by A.P. INDY! Eye of the Sphynx is herself a finalist in the Broodmare of the Year category.

Also nominated was ROCK HARD TEN’s Rockin Heat, a Champion Two-Year-Old Male finalist. Rockin Heat was first or second in all five of his juvenile starts, including the G3 Summer S. and G3 Grey Breeders’ Cup S. He was bred by Y-Lo Racing Stables LLC, and is trained by Reade Baker for Bear Stables. Congratulations and good luck to these horses and all the other finalists!
