CANDY RIDE is the #2 sire of 2011 stakes winners with 14 total and three over a big fall weekend for the perennial leader. On Saturday, CANDY RIDE’s 2-year-old son Sweet Luca got up to win the $110,000, six-furlong Sun Power S. at Hawthorne. Owned and bred by Fortino Inc. and trained by Chris Block, the colt was winning his second straight and his first stakes.
In Maryland, the 4-year-old Candyman E was doing some good work over the same six-furlong trip in the $150,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash S. at Laurel. Candyman E was sent off the 8-5 choice in the prestigious race–formerly a Grade 1 but contested this year as an ungraded event after it was cancelled last year–and looked the part, patiently awaiting a seam in mid-stretch before sprinting home a popular winner. Bred by Nelson Bunker Hunt, Candyman E has now won four straight for trainer Anthony Dutrow and owner Kuehne Racing, Morris Bailey, The Elkstone Group LLC, and Michael Dubb.
On Sunday, CANDY RIDE’s Northern Candyride kept the action going in the 1 1/16-mile To Much Coffee S. Bred by Martin Schmucker, Northern Candyride was winning his third straight, his second stakes and his seventh race overall and now has earnings of over $220,000.
