ENGLISH CHANNEL got off to a fast start at stud in 2011 and only improved his reputation in 2012 as one of the most exciting young sires in the nation. His runners included a champion and Classic winner in Straight of Dover, a Grade 2 winner on the main track in Blueskiesnrainbows, and the standout Optimizer.

The champion son of SMART STRIKE, at the end of the season, was ranked #4 on the Leading Sophomore Sires List, behind only Hard Spun, Scat Daddy and Street Sense.

ENGLISH CHANNEL’s nine black-type winners on the year ranked him second to Hard Spun among sophomores, and, on the General Sire List, that number equalled or outpaced such veterans as Distorted Humor, Street Cry (Ire), Malibu Moon, Indian Charlie, Tiznow, etc.

Despite having just two crops to race, ENGLISH CHANNEL was ranked #13 on the Leading Turf Sires List–he was by far the leading sophomore sire on the list–and finished the year ahead of the likes of War Front, More Than Ready Ghostzapper, Arch, etc.

On the Leading Synthetic Sires List, he again was the top-ranked sophomore, ranking #12 among all U.S.-based sires and ahead of Distorted Humor, Empire Maker, Tale of the Cat, etc.

ENGLISH CHANNEL’s 2012 runners included the following stakes winners:

• Strait of Dover, a 3yo colt who won the $1m Queen’s Plate S. and Marine S. at Woodbine and was honored with a Sovereign Award as top 3yo colt.
• Blueskiesnrainbows, a 3yo colt from the Bob Baffert barn who won the G2 Swaps S. at Betfair Hollywood Park and placed third in the G1 Santa Anita Derby
