From Saratoga to Del Mar, runners by Lane’s End sires won some of the country’s biggest races on the last weekend in July.

CURLIN’s son Palace Malice, fresh off his victory in the G1 Belmont S., doubled his graded tally with an ultra-impressive performance in the G2 Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga. He’s now being pointed toward the G1 Travers S. A day after the Jim Dandy, the operation that owns Palace Malice, Cot Campbell’s Dogwood Stable, sent out another winner by CURLIN at Saratoga. The 2yo filly Miss Frost, making her route and turf bow, got her nose down to a win a competitive $85,000 maiden special. On the same day, the 3yo CURLIN gelding Bold Curlin won a one-mile allowance at Presque Isle by two lengths.

CURLIN is currently ranked #3 on the second-crop sire list by earnings, stakes winners and stakes wins.

The always-game Kettle Corn became CANDY RIDE (ARG)’s second stakes winner in a week’s time when he defeated the Grade 1 winner Paynter in the G2 San Diego H. at Del Mar. Kettle Corn was making his first start since running Game On Dude to a length in the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup. His victory came seven days after the 3yo colt Grand Tito dead-heated for the win in the grassy Showing Up S. at Gulfstream Park. With nine stakes winners on the year, CANDY RIDE is once again a top 15 active sire on the General Sire List.

Also at Del Mar, the multiple Grade 1 winner Richard’s Kid, by LEMON DROP KID, successfully defended his title in the G3 Cougar II H., a race in which he set the track record last year. The victory pushed his career earnings well past the $2.4 million mark. Lane’s End sales grad Sky Kingdom and ENGLISH CHANNEL’s Blueskiesnrainbows, another Lane’s End sales grad, completed the Lane’s End trifecta in the Cougar.

Capping the weekend was the undefeated 3yo colt Smart Promotion, who became SMART STRIKE’s latest stakes winner with a two-length tally in the Count Lathum H. in Canada. Smart Promotion is now 3-for-3 lifetime.

How good a year are Lane’s End sires having? Of the Top 22 active sires in North America, five stand at Lane’s End–SMART STRIKE, CANDY RIDE (ARG), LEMON DROP KID, LANGFUHR and CITY ZIP. That’s more than any farm. Thanks to all the breeders and horsemen and women who have made this possible!
