A Champion juvenile; the dam of a world-class international Champion; and offered in foal to one of the world’s most sought after sires, Night Lagoon has the credentials to make her mark anywhere in the world.

Night Lagoon was rated as her nation’s Champion Two-Year-Old Filly after capturing the Preis der Winterkönigin (gr. III), Germany’s most prestigious prize for juvenile fillies. Night Lagoon ranks among the most significant offspring of her sire, Nijinsky II’s grandson, Lagunas. Himself a Champion at two, Lagunas trained on to capture the German Derby (gr. I) at three.

A half-sister to multiple stakes winner, and German Derby (gr. I) runner, Night Tango, Night Lagoon is out of Nenuphar, a stakes winning half-sister to stakes winners National Academy and Nostro Amico.

Although she has a championship resume, and a classic pedigree, what is most impressive about Night Lagoon is her produce record. The dam of six winners with her first six foals, Night Lagoon produced a truly exceptional performer in the shape of Novellist. A Champion in two countries at three, Novellist closed out his sophomore career with a 4½ lengths victory in the Gran Premio del Jockey Club Italiano (gr. I). While that race marked the end of Novellist’s three-year-old campaign, it also was the beginning of a remarkable sequence of victories that would see Novellist undefeated through the rest of his career.

The first of those saw Novellist return from a near seven month break to account for German Derby (gr. I) victor, Walpark, in the Grosser Preis der Badischen Unternehmer (gr. II). Seeking fresh fields to conquer, Novellist next lined up for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (gr. I), and scored in decisive style from grade one winner Dunaden, with Cirrus Des Aigles – officially rated the world’s leading thoroughbred – also in the beaten field. Even better was to come in one of Europe’s most prestigious contests, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (gr. I). Storming clear two furlongs from home, Novellist crossed the line five lengths clear of the runner-up, Irish Derby (gr. I) hero Trading Leather delivering one of the most impressive performances of the season. Novellist completed his run of victories in the Grosser Preis von Baden (gr. I), where he accounted for grade one winners Seismos and Meandre. Ending his career as a group one winner in four different countries, Novellist was not only rated European Champion Older Horse, but was also the highest ranked four-year-old in the world for 2013.

Night Lagoon’s produce record appears likely to add more luster in the near future. With her two foals following Novellist, Night Lagoon, is dam of the currently active stakes performers

Nuntius and Ninfea. Nuntius is a winner of three of five starts to date, and on July 13, was beaten just a ½ length in the black-type Bavaria Preis. A three-year-old of 2014, Ninfea has a win and two seconds in her first three starts, including when taking runner-up spot in the black-type Grosser Preis der Landschaftichen Brandkasse Hannover. It’s worth noting that Night Lagoon’s three stakes performers are not only by three different sires, but from three different sire lines, clearly demonstrating her prepotency as a producer.

Night Lagoon is offered in foal to one of the world’s most sought after sires, Danzig’s astonishing son, War Front. From his first four crops, all sired at an advertised fee of $10,000, War Front has sired 32 stakes winners, 17 group and graded stakes winners, and six group or grade one winners. Last year, with a crop conceived at $15,000, War Front’s yearling average was $363,001, and mares in foal to him averaged $1,550,000. With his strongest crops still to race, War Front’s record can only become even more impressive.

The mating with Night Lagoon gives the cross of War Front over Nijinsky II line mares that has already produced three stakes winners, and which is TrueNicks rated A++. We can also note that Nijinsky in general has been an extremely positive influence for War Front, appearing in no less than 11 of his stakes winners, five of them group or graded.

Despite the stellar quality of War Front’s most recent books, it is certain that very few will have matched Night Lagoon’s achievement of producing an international superstar, and the combination makes her a near unique offering.
