Like her namesake, Stanwyck is every inch a star, both on pedigree and on race-record.
She is by Unbridled’s classic winning son, Empire Maker, the sire of such as Royal Delta, an Eclipse Award winner in three straight years, exciting young sire Pioneerof the Nile, and other grade one winners Bodemeister, Emollient, Grace Hall, Mushka, Acoma, In Lingerie, Country Star and Last Full Measure. Out of “super-producer” Toussaud, Empire Maker also has the pedigree to develop into an equally important broodmare sire.
Herself a multiple grade one performer, Stanwyck is half-sister to three other grade one performers. The trio is headed by Giacomo, who produced a near last-to-first effort to capture the 2005 renewal of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Stanwyck is also half-sister to the $2,300,000 earner Tiago, whose triumphs included the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Goodwood Stakes (gr. I), Swaps Stakes (gr. II) and Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II).
Stanwyck’s dam is the speedy and precocious four-time stakes winner Set Them Free. A three-quarters sister to Squill – three times a group winner and also group placed in Europe – Set Them Free is also half-sister to stakes winner Vachti, the second dam of Arc Trial Stakes (gr. III) scorer Camborne. Stanwyck’s second dam, Valseuse, is a half-sister to River Rose, a juvenile sprint stakes winner, who produced European Champion Two-Year-Old and French 1,000 Guineas (gr. I) captress Baiser Vole, herself the dam of three stakes winners. River Rose is also dam of Squill, of multiple group winner Tenue de Soiree, and of stakes winners Neverneyev and Ministerial, and is ancestress of several other notable winners, including Champion Mister Slippers.
Stanwyck has more than lived up to her stellar pedigree. Her very first outing in stakes company resulted in a courageous victory in the Turnback the Alarm Handicap (gr. III) as she ran down A.P. Indy’s grade one performing daughter Centring, with grade two winner Royal Lahaina, with stakes winners Lady Cohiba, Roman Invader, Moon Philly and Street Secret among those behind.
The Turnback the Alarm Handicap was the first in a series of exceptional performances that saw Stanwyck finish 1-2-3 in seven consecutive stakes events over a near ten month period. Those efforts included seconds in the Paseana Stakes, beaten just a head, and the Shuvee Handicap (gr. II), and thirds in the Santa Margarita Stakes (gr. I), Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I), Personal Ensign Stakes (gr. I) and Santa Maria Stakes (gr. II). During this time she defeated such as multiple grade one winners Princess of Sylmar and Belle Gallantey, grade one winner Let Faith Arise, grade two winner Majestic River, grade two winner Spellbound, grade two winner Fiftyshadesofhay, grade two winner Unlimited Budget, and grade three winners Rose to Gold, Hot Stones and Flashy American.
A graded stakes winner and supremely consistent grade one performer, Stanwyck is not only by a beautifully-bred classic winner and outstanding sire, but is also half-sister to a Kentucky Derby winner, out of a multiple stakes mare who has produced four grade one performers. With these credentials, she is surely a “can’t miss” broodmare prospect.
