A colt from the first crop of Lane’s End’s Twirling Candy, a Grade I-winning son of Candy Ride (Arg), fetched a bid of $400,000 from veterinarian Robert McMartin to top Monday’s Barretts Select 2yo Sale in Pomona, California. McMartin was acting on behalf of Conquest Stable.

Consigned by Eddie Woods as hip 39, the colt was produced by Dama (Storm Cat) and hails from the family of Grade I winner Corporate Report. The colt sold to Ryston Stables for $50,000 at last year’s OBS August Sale. He breezed an eighth in :10 flat at the Barrretts under-tack preview.

“He’s a beautiful mover,” Woods said before the sale. “He’s a very elegant horse, by a sire who looks like he is getting a nice horse.”

There were two notable buybacks at Barretts on Monday. Hip 33, a colt by Hard Spun consigned by Woods, was led out unsold at $500,000, while the last horse through the ring, a Street Sense filly selling from McCarthy Bloodstock as Hip 116, failed to sell at $400,000.

It was the final Barretts juvenile auction to be held at the Fairplex Complex in Pomona. The sales company will move south to Del Mar for its May 2yo Sale.
