Freshman sire Twirling Candy was represented by his first winner Monday when Queen of Silence won the second race at Gulfstream Park, a five furlong maiden special weight on the turf.
Queen of Silence races for owner Alexandra Racing Stable LLC, who purchased her out of the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $11,000, and is trained by Antonio Sano. She was bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm and is out of the A.P. Indy mare Silent Moccasins.
The 2-year-old filly sprinted out to take the lead under jockey Manoel Cruz and fended off a late closer to win by a neck. Final time for five furlongs was :58.35.
Twirling Candy is a son of leading sire Candy Ride out of House of Danzing (Chester House). His fifth dam is Won’t Tell You, who produced Triple Crown winner Affirmed.
Only racing once as a 2-year-old, Twirling Candy was a four-time winner in five starts at 3, including victories in the G1 Malibu Stakes, the G2 Del Mar Derby, and the Oceanside Stakes. As a 4-year-old, he won a pair of Grade 2 events – the Strub Stakes and the Californian Stakes – and finished second in the G1 TVG Pacific Classic and third in the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup.
Twirling Candy entered stud in 2012 after winning seven races and earning $944,900. He stands at Lane’s End Farm for a 2015 fee of $10,000 live foal/stands and nurses.
