It was a case of like father, like son for DISCREETLY MINE’s exciting 2-year-old colt Sheikh of Sheikhs, a $330,000 Fasig-Tipton May graduate who raised some eyebrows—and some heartrates—with a stylish 1 3/4-length debut win at Saratoga Aug. 22.
DISCREETLY MINE was an absolute standout on Saratoga’s strip, romping by 6 1/4 lengths over Super Saver in a maiden-breaking performance at two in 2009. The following season, he returned to win the G2 Amsterdam and the G1 King’s Bishop in two hugely impressive efforts.
DISCREETLY MINE evidently passed on some of that love of the Spa to Sheikh of Sheikhs, who was facing a tough field going six furlongs on the main track that included six horses at under 9-1. Taking it right to them under jockey Eric Cancel, Sheikh of Sheikhs opened up by two lengths after a half in :46 flat and had plenty in reserve to win by 1 3/4 lengths. His final time was racehorse material for a young horse: 1:10 flat.
Trainer Wesley Ward, no stranger to good 2-year-olds as the conditioner of horses like Hootenanny (QUALITY ROAD), confirmed Sheikh of Sheikhs will make his next start in stakes company.
“We’re going to the G1 Breeders’ Futurity [at Keeneland],” said Ward.
Sheikh of Sheikhs was one of the talking horses at FTMMAY after breezing a strong eighth in :10 flat. He was purchased at Timonium by Abdullah Saeed Almaddah.
Sheikh of Sheikhs wasn’t DISCREETLY MINE’s only impressive juvenile winner in August.
Out in California, the 2-year-old filly My Dynamo debuted a winner in a $71,000 maiden special at Del Mar, rallying from a mid-pack position to beat C. C. Zipp (CITY ZIP) by half a length. The final time for the 5 1/2-furlong main-track event was :57 3/5.
At Delaware Park, another 2-year-old filly by DISCREETLY MINE, the debuting Miss Prudence, came through as the favorite in a $34,000 maiden special special on the dirt. And at Presque Isle, yet another 2-year-old miss by DISCREETLY MINE, the Nick Caruso-trained Strong Gale, won as the favorite in her unveiling in a one-mile maiden special on the Tapeta.
In all, DISCREETLY MINE had seven maiden special winners in the month of August. The smart money is on this outstanding son of MINESHAFT to keep heating up. Keep an eye out for his yearlings at Keeneland September.
