Eastern invader Rusty Slipper, piloted by England’s champion jockey of 2015, Silvestre de Sousa, in his Del Mar Debut, accelerated powerfully in the stretch to win the Grade III $100,000 Red Carpet Handicap Saturday.

Well-placed in the early stages of the mile and three-eighths marathon over Del Mar’s infield grass course, Rusty Slipper unleashed an impressive rally in the final furlong to score by one and one-half lengths over the 5-2 favorite, Elektrum, ridden by Victor Espinoza. The latter claimed foul after the race, alleging interference turning into the stretch the first time. However, after studying the videotape, the claim was disallowed by the board of stewards.

Third in the field of eleven fillies and mares was the race’s 2014 winner, Three Hearts, who was one and three-quarter lengths behind the runner-up after setting the pace until the final quarter-mile and a nose in front of fourth-place Trophee. Soresca was scratched from the also-eligible list.

Rusty Slipper, trained by H. Graham Motion for the RMJ Stables of Zanim Meahjohn of Trinidad, West Indies, accomplished the distance in 2:15.34 and returned $14.20, $6.40 and $4.60 after her sixth victory in 17 starts. The five-year-old daughter of LEMON DROP KID earned $60,000 to boost her bankroll to $326,393.

Elektrum, winner of the John C. Mabee Stakes last summer, paid $4.40 and $3, while Three Hearts returned $4.20 to show.
