Iron Rob, a maiden winner at Los Alamitos two starts back Dec. 4, was coming off a well-beaten seventh-place effort over track and trip Jan. 3. On the lead in the early strides, the dark bay let favored Tiz a Billy take control down the backstretch. He moved to challenge for the lead after a half in :45.04 and outkicked Tiz a Billy to the wire for his first stakes victory. Iron Rob was pulled up after the wire and did not return to the winner’s circle. “He’s fine,” said winning trainer George Papaprdromou. “He stumbled coming out of the gate. Santiago [Gonzalez] was holding him the whole way. Crossing the wire, he was holding him even. He jumped off because he didn’t want to have him keep galloping out or to have to jog back after.”
