Reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Catch a Glimpse put in her most impressive performance of the season when beating the boys in the Penn Mile to remain undefeated on turf. Seizing the early advantage, the chestnut ticked off comfortable opening fractions of :23.99 and :47.96 under a motionless Florent Geroux as Giant Run tracked from second. Given the signal at the top of the lane, she flawlessly switched leads and immediately kicked into high gear, sailing home to a decisive victory. Stablemate Airoforce, who was getting back on grass for the first time since running a neck second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Oct. 30, came running late to make it a Mark Casse exacta and Giant Run held on for third.
“She’s just a terrific filly,” commented Norm Casse, assistant to father and winning conditioner Mark Casse. “She runs on a lot of heart. We’re super proud to be affiliated with her. I think Florent touched on it. The horse is becoming more professional. She is more relaxed and it’s making her a much more effective racehorse, which is really a scary thing to think of.”
As for her next start, Casse said, “We like to go race to race with these horses. We will take a look at her tomorrow morning. We will get her back to Kentucky and map out another plan for her. I wouldn’t say we have anything on the drawing board yet.”
The Casses have had success running fillies against males in the past. The father-son team saddled champion Tepin (Bernstein) to a dazzling victory in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile and will take on males with the Eclipse winner again later this month in Royal Ascot’s G1 Queen Anne S.
Suffering her only loss when fifth in a sloppy off-the-turfer at Saratoga last July, Catch a Glimpse earned her diploma next out in a grassy allowance at Woodbine three weeks later and followed suit with a win in that venue’s GII Natalma S. Sept. 12. The sophomore captured the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at odds of 6-1 Oct. 30, which put her in the running for an Eclipse Award and earned her three Sovereign Awards. Her streak continued this season with a trio of victories in Gulfstream’s GIII Herecomesthebride S. Feb. 27, Keeneland’s GIII Appalachian S. Apr. 14 and Churchill’s GIII Edgewood S. May 6.
Catch a Glimpse is a half-sister to Grade III winner Old Forester (Forestry). Her 21-year-old dam produced her first foal since Catch a Glimpse when giving birth to a Can the Man filly Mar. 19.
