QUALITY ROAD, the #1 third-crop sire in North America with over $3.6 million in progeny earnings, recently came out on top in several categories of Bill Oppenheim’s APEX Rankings, as well. QUALITY ROAD is the:
- #1 Sire in KY by ABC Runner Index
- #1 Sire Worldwide by ABC Runners
- #3 Sire Worldwide by A Runners
(Published bi-annually in the Thoroughbred Daily News, APEX rankings are used to gauge how often a stallion sires a top-level horses, as determined by money earned in a given jurisdiction, such as North America. An ‘A’ Runner, for instance, is in the top 2% of earners. ‘B’ Runners are in the next 2%, ‘C’ Runners the next 4%, and ABC Runners representing the top 8% of earners.)
With 44 ‘ABC’ Runners from his first crop—equating to an ABC Index of 2.08—QUALITY ROAD is the #1 sire in Kentucky by that measure. By way of comparison, Munnings sports an ABC Index of 1.79, followed by the likes of Blame (1.59), Lookin At Lucky (1.44), and Super Saver (1.09).
And no third-crop sire in the world has more ABC Runners than QUALITY ROAD’s 44. That’s no surprise to observers who have watched the likes of Illuminant (G1 Gamely S.), Hootenanny (G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) and Blofeld (G2 Gulfstream Park H.) ply their trade.
In fact, QUALITY ROAD is the #3 third-crop sire worldwide by A Runners, indicating his prowess at getting elite-level performers.
One of the biggest takeaways of Oppenheim’s latest APEX Rankings is the performance of QUALITY ROAD’s sophomores and his 4yos. With an APEX Ranking of 0.91 for his 2yos, 1.87 for his 3yos, and 2.12 for his 4yos, QUALITY ROAD is a sire whose progeny just get better and better as they mature. That’s exciting news for a sire whose most recent crop of juveniles includes the TDN Rising Star Klimt and the eye-catching Saratoga maiden special winner Ancient Warfare.
