Only one horse has sired three individual Eclipse Award winners in the past three years, and in 2017, that sire will stand for an eminently attractive fee of $50,000.
We are talking, of course, about CITY ZIP, perennially a leading sire, and a Top 10 active sire on the 2016 General Sire List for the third straight year.
When CITY ZIP’s daughter Finest City roared down the stretch to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita last November, she became her sire’s fourth Breeders’ Cup winner, and on Jan. 21, she was honored as Champion Female Sprinter by Eclipse voters.
In 2014 at Santa Anita, CITY ZIP was responsible for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Work All Week, as well as the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Dayathespa. The two were named Champion Sprinter and Champion Female Turf horse, respectively.
CITY ZIP also sired the 2015 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf winner Catch a Glimpse, putting him in rarified air among sires by Breeders’ Cup winners.
Only Kris S., Storm Cat, Tapit and Unbridled’s Song have more individual Breeders’ Cup winners than CITY ZIP—each has five—while CITY ZIP sits alongside Awesome Again, Danzig, Galileo (Ire) and SMART STRIKE with four individual winners.
In all, CITY ZIP had 13 stakes winners in 2016, including six graded winners. Among them were the aforementioned Catch a Glimpse, who captured the 1 1/4-mile G1 Belmont Oaks Invitational S. in a sparkling 1:59.87.
