With the Grade 1 winners Palace and Personal Diary among his 2014 runners, CITY ZIP again ranks among the best sires in North America despite standing for a fraction of many of his rivals.

CITY ZIP’s 2014 numbers speak for themselves:

-Tied #2 by Grade 1 winners (2)

-Tied #2 by Stakes Winners (12)

-#8 General Sire

-#1 by Winners (121)

-Tied #1 by Repeat Winners (40)

The talent and versatility of CITY ZIP’s runners are exemplified by his two Grade 1 winners this year.

Palace is a brilliantly fast sprinter who won Saratoga’s G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. in 1:08 2/5 on Aug. 2. The victory, his 10th in 20 career starts, pushed his earnings past the million-dollar mark. Palace is trained by Linda Rice, who also conditioned CITY ZIP himself.

“This horse is such a competitor,” Rice said about Palace after the Vanderbilt. “He’s got the heart of a lion.”

Palace also won Belmont’s G2 True North S. in 1:08 1/5 on the Belmont Stakes undercard.

Just as game, but plying a somewhat different trade, is CITY ZIP’s emerging 3yo filly Personal Diary. A homebred for valued Lane’s End clients G. Watts Humphrey and St. George Farm, Personal Diary was over 11 lengths last in the G1 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 16. But the chestnut unleashed a huge late rally to win going away by 2 3/4 lengths to earn her first stakes success. She stopped the clock for nine furlongs on turf in a swift 1:47 2/5.

Personal Diary is CITY ZIP’s SEVENTH 3yo stakes winner in 2014, a list that also includes Alert Bay ($200k Echo Eddie S.-SA), City by the Bay ($50k Seattle H.-EMD), Oliver Zip ($100k Fred Cappy Capossela S.-AQU), Red Velvet ($100k Jersey Girl S.-BEL), Ruslana ($50k OBS Sprint S.), and Sweet Emma Rose ($61k Crank It Up S.-MTH).

CITY ZIP’s further 2014 stakes winners include Ancil, Evolution Rocks, Speedinthruthecity, and Work All Week.

Meanwhile, CITY ZIP’s standout Grade 1 winner Dayatthespa is gearing up again, recently running second in the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton De La Rose S. at Saratoga in her return to the races.

At the sales, CITY ZIP’s yearlings have brought $135,000, $100,000, etc. in 2014, and he is well-represented at Keeneland September, where he has 44 yearlings catalogued.

CITY ZIP – Superb performance at a sensible price.
