CITY ZIP, last year’s #4 ranked sire on the General Sire List and a top 15 sire this season, had a huge Independence Day weekend.

Leading the way was his 3yo son Grand Bili, who earned a career-best in the G3 Carry Back S. at Gulfstream Park. The gray colt dueled through an unheard-of half of :43 3/5 on the main track, yet kept finding in the lane to win by a length. His final time of 1:08 3/5 for the six-furlong race earned him  a giant 108 BRIS Figure.

It was the second time a 3yo son by CITY ZIP dazzled in a Gulfstream graded event this year. In March, Ready for Rye beat the Grade 1 winner Daredevil by 2 3/4 lengths in the G2 Swale S.

Speaking of Ready for Rye, that one was tried on the grass for the first time on July 4 and set off the proverbial fireworks in a seven-furlong Belmont optional claimer. The CITY ZIP gelding led every step and stopped the clock in 1:20 4/5 while airing by 2 3/4 lengths in the salty 10-horse affair.

Out on the West Coast, CITY ZIP’s newest standout emerged in the form of the 2yo filly Stays in Vegas. Given a tough assignment in Pleasanton’s $60,000 Juan Gonzalez Memorial S. at first asking, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained filly was squeezed at the start and left last of six. But, according to the official chart, she, “set out after the leaders once on the turn, moved three quick quickly, gained command near the furlong pole and drew off as much the best.”

“I’ve been working her, so I knew she wasn’t that quick out of the gate, but I was surprised that she broke that slowly,” her rider, Ricardo Gonzalez, told the San Francisco Gate. “But I knew she could run, so I wasn’t too worried. When I asked her, she just took off.”

To top it all off, CITY ZIP’s reigning G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Work All Week, last year’s Champion Sprinter, continues to ramp up for his title defense with a second in the G2 Smile Sprint S. at Gulfstream. The Midwest color bearer has now been first or second in 16 of 17 starts.
