GUN RUNNER (c, 4, Candy Ride {Arg}–Quiet Giant {GSW, $405,389}, by Giant’s Causeway), who was forced to miss the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational due to the EHV-1 outbreak at Fair Grounds, made his belated 4-year-old debut in style, rolling to a frontrunning tour de force victory in the GIII Razorback H. at Oaklawn. Last year’s GI Kentucky Derby and GI Travers S. third-place finisher was second in both the GII Pennsylvania Derby and GI Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile before earning an overdue Grade I tally in the Clark H. Nov. 25 at Churchill. Crushed down to 1-5 in this return, the chestnut broke alertly from his rail draw and regular pilot Florent Geroux took no chances, putting the big favorite on the lead in the early stages. Running comfortably in the clear through splits of :23.18 and :46.88 while chased by Blue Tone (Birdstone), Gun Runner made a break for it passing three-quarters in 1:11.29 and was never threatened in the lane, romping to a six-length score and stopping the timer in a sharp 1:40.97. Hawaakom (Jazil) was second-best. Gun Runner’s dam, a half to champion Saint Liam (Saint Ballado), has an unraced 3-year-old Malibu Moon filly named Quiet Flirt and foaled a pair of Tapit fillies in 2015 and 2016. She was bred back to Candy Ride (Arg) last spring.
